Untitled(ADytthMt)
A more recent comic-strip-page. I'm thinking of using this as the raw material for a larger painting.

Hey, Professor,
this is a good page because it is open-ended and leaves me thinking of the progression of the couple/friends as they wend their way through the Met, making gut-felt observations about the works. Plus the Jesus' foot tumor thing is funny. And, visually, the works read as what they are (esp. the Newman) with a minimum of means but more importantly the impact they have on the viewers/protagonists is felt. The thing I like most is that this drawing comes after previous posts of really imaginative abstractions that relate to museums and art objects. They all begin to speak to each other in a weird way that is impressive in its range of visual strategies. I particularly enjoy that Familiar Face drawing from the 17th that shockingly got no comments thus far. What's wrong with people? Is everyone busy making their own art? Or are they just lazy with the responses?
Maybe people are lazy. No one commented on my badass Hulk drawing from a couple weeks back. Zak Smith WISHES he could draw a Hulk that good.
'FmlrFc' is a funny one... sort of crapped that out last minute. I never know which drawings people are going to respond to.
And I'm curious, how do the earlier abstractions relate to museums and art objects? I can see it in 'nmnbnd', but not really any others. I'm just asking because I've been trying to strain out the 'meta' in my method(for the most part). But enough alliteration.
Yes, I agree my comment about the "imaginative abstractions relating to museums and art objects" was vague. I tried to explain in the gdblssmrca comments. But in Fmlrfc I see an abstraction of color and line atop a shape I've seen before in your work: something that refers to corners in a room or a pedestal or base of some kind. For some reason this automatically makes me think of art presentation or more acurately and interestingly in the case of this drawing, elements of a painting gathered together to make a (2D and still painted) sculpture or deconstructed painting. I am not even interested in this as subject matter personally, I'm just saying I see it here. Maybe I have this kind of reading of this drawing because I first saw your comic and am assuming too much representation in this new work.
Are you trying to strain out the "meta" in your work? I am curious why? What do you see as being left over?
'Pat is the only one of my friends who
is an 18th-century roue. Despite what
people say about Pat's lack of "life-
skills", what he really lacks is "dying-
with-dignity" skills; instead he opts
for the "drink oneself to near-death
and then resolve to turn over a new
leaf with a transparent lack of
commitment" skill set. Pat is
surprisingly intelligent given the
prolific amount of booze and drugs he
has taken over his life. Which is to
say, he is mildly retarded. I have
known Pat for fourteen years, and at
the beginning he would play the
vicious, intolerant bigot to my
verminiferous Gollum. Now, he plays the
vicious, intolerant bigot to my
vicious, intolerant bigot. I'm amazed
we've stayed friends despite our
multiple attempts to derail that
friendship. By the way, Pat will die of
Hodgkin's disease.' --Bobcat, 2004

I thank you for your comments.
